Electric Vehicles Growing in Popularity Means More Charging Stations in Parking Lots and Places of Business

Reducing carbon emissions is no longer just a vision for the future; it is a common goal today and is top of mind for many. Within this collective mission, one area that is gaining in popularity is electric vehicles (EV). If we are to meet the country’s goal of reducing emissions by 50% by 2030, we need an uptick in electric vehicle production and strategically placed charging stations. While the popularity is growing, one aspect that threatens to stagnate things is the potential recharging bottleneck. As a business owner, you have an opportunity to do your part in saving the environment and give your employees and customers a place to charge their vehicles.

Choose to work with the professionals at J & S Electrical Contractors, Inc. to add charging stations to your commercial or industrial parking lot. Our team has the experience needed to properly manage this new project and ensure it is completed quickly.

Types of Charging Stations from Which to Choose

Electric vehicles do not have the same luxury that an internal combustion engine car does. That is, drivers cannot pull into a gas station and easily plug in their EV. If you want to create another revenue stream or provide a service, you have three main types of charging stations you could add:

  • Level 1: These charging stations are the slowest of the three. They use a 120V AC outlet. For every hour the vehicle charges, the driver obtains about a 2-5-mile driving range. For example, after 8 hours of charging, the car will get a range of about 40 miles. This is not too bad for shorter commutes. This level is best for those charging their vehicles at home. While it may be a good option for a homeowner, apartment dwellers do not have the same access unless public chargers are in place.
  • Level 2: This level utilizes 240V residential or 208V commercial charging. You can expect an electric vehicle to gain about 10 to 20 miles of range per hour of charging. This option is much faster than Level 1 chargers but can still take all night to get the driving range you want. Level 2 charging stations are commonly used for public and workplace charging, with several people needing access throughout the day.
  • DC Fast Chargers (DCFC): For fast charging with longer drive ranges, direct current (DC) fast charging equipment is the best choice. Users can expect 60 to 80 miles of range per 20 minutes of charging. Think of these like electric gas stations. These are a good choice along heavy traffic corridors.
